BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

                        "Awareness Through Education...
                                                                                  ...Responsibility Through Involvement"

Since 1974, the Bayard Cutting Arboretum Horticultural Society (BCAHS) has been promoting sound home gardening methods, preservation of the environment and an appreciation of the beautiful Bayard Cutting Arboretum and our Long Island Community. Profits generated by the Society’s fundraising events are donated to Bayard Cutting Arboretum to help maintain the historic Westbrook Manor House, summer home of the Cutting Family.

BCAHS members enjoy numerous education programs, lectures, demonstrations and networking opportunities throughout the year. Monthly meetings include a short business portion, followed by an engaging guest speaker. Informative monthly newsletters are sent to members via email. Periodic field trips are arranged to visit gardens and other sites of interest.

Hundreds of visitors come to the Society’s annual benefit plant sale held at the Arboretum the weekend after Memorial Day. The Annual Plant Sale features attractive and unusual perennials, specialty plants and saplings collected at the Arboretum. Master Gardeners are available to help answer questions.

BCAHS members operate Granny’s Attic, a thrift store located at the Arboretum’s Lower Carriage House. Visitors can purchase gently-used household items at a modest price. Donations of small household items are welcome! Please, no furniture, books or clothing. Items can be dropped off at Granny’s Attic when it is open or at the Westbrook Manor House.

2023 MEMBERS OF THE YEAR

CAROL KIRSCHNER AND PAULA SCHLICHT

Carol has been active with the Bayard Horticultural Society for many years. She was president for two years as well as treasurer. She conducted General meetings as well as Board meetings. She helped with the Membership committee and was involved with the Education Committee organizing workshops and trips. She has been Programs co-chair and now is Chairperson of the Programs committee selecting and arranging interesting General meeting programs for the membership. This is a very time-consuming position trying to secure speakers and presentations that will spark interest in our membership.

She has been involved with the Plant Sale for many years, selecting plants for sale and helping at the actual sale. She is very knowledgeable about plants and gardening and was very willing to give her expertise to those seeking information about certain plants before purchase. She has chaired the Social Committee with the Holiday Parties, as well as the refreshments at the general meetings. She also hosted a wine and cheese party before one of the tours of the Woodland Garden.

Carol also volunteers on Fridays at the Arboretum at the main desk fielding questions from visitors concerning house tours and grounds tours. She also collects payments for the tours as well. She has also volunteered at many of the social events given by the Arboretum over the years. Some of these parties involved costumes depicting the Bayard Cutting family and servants. She is most deserving of receiving the award for Member of the Year.

Congratulations, Carol.

So many volunteers make this organization successful. It is

difficult to select one individual to receive our Volunteer of the Year Award with so many members providing their time and talent.

Paula has been active with our Bayard Cutting Arboretum

Horticultural Society for several years holding all offices except Treasurer. She volunteers at Granny’s Attic, the Gift Shop, the Plant Sale and is currently our General Meeting Secretary & Corresponding Secretary sending thoughtful cards to our members in need.

Over the years she has helped Janice Alto with our Holiday Party and lends a hand with hospitality duties. Most notably, she has helped coordinate the holiday decoration task...by spending much time with the creative design process, the acquisition of materials and application of holiday decorations in several rooms within the Manor House. Most recently Paula has decorated the formal dining room with spectacular results!

Paula continues to amaze us while also being employed and caring for her many grandchildren. She is most deserving of our Member of the Year Award.

Congratulations Paula!!
